My name is Joanne Adams and I am the qualified primary teacher behind the 11+ Verbal Reasoning programme (GL).
I have been working with pupils to prepare them for the 11+ entrance exams for nearly 10 years. With 15 years classroom experience, I noticed that most main-stream pupils didn't have any school-based lessons in Verbal Reasoning unlike their peers in private schools.
Verbal Reasoning is not a subject taught in the National Curriculum for England and Wales. In such a competitive climate for grammar school places, I felt it was important to provide an opportunity for main-stream pupils to learn and develop confidence in all the skills required for this unusual exam.
This programme is designed for pupils in Year 4 and Year 5, who intend to sit the GL 11+ entrance exam. The programme also offers advice about revision strategies and tips for the exam day itself.

Your child will benefit from fourteen, small-group lessons of approximately one hour each (maximum size of the group is 8 children).
Each lesson is taught by Mrs Joanne Adams (online via Zoom) and covers: 8 new words to stretch your child's vocabulary, revision of the previous week's skills and 1-3 new skills (depending on complexity).
The programme takes a step-by-step approach to build your child's confidence with each of the question types. Your child will also benefit from listening to how other pupils approached the same question. The group is designed as a supportive and nurturing environment to help every child develop confidence.
There is a pre-recorded version of each session available in the Learning Hub in case your child is ill and misses a session or wishes to watch again for revision purposes.
Absolutely. This is a foundation programme designed for pupils in Year 4 and Year 5, with little or no experience of Verbal Reasoning. If your child attends a private preparatory school, they are likely to have covered some of the content of this course already and therefore it is probably not best suited to your child's needs.
The live session will take place on Zoom at 6:30pm every Wednesday evening and will last for approximately one hour.
You can access a pre-recorded version of the lesson in the Learning Hub.
Your child will have covered all the question types likely to appear in the GL Verbal Reasoning exam. A baseline assessment is available in the Learning Hub to complete online, plus a free familiarisation paper to download.
I recommend that pupils purchase the GL practice papers and use their new knowledge to improve their speed, accuracy and confidence in the exam. A blank 'Exam Tracker' and 'Next Steps' advice sheet are also included.
There is also usually availability to book in for Summer Booster sessions ( in the 6 week holidays), should your child need a little bit more support.
No.
I am not an affiliate of any grammar school nor am I associated to any exam board. This programme has been developed from years of experience preparing pupils to sit the GL 11+ Verbal Reasoning exam.
Most grammar schools require pupils to sit exams in English and Maths in addition to Verbal Reasoning. We strongly advise that pupils prepare for the Maths and English exams carefully too. Some grammar schools invite pupils for an interview too. It is best to familiarise yourself with the entrance requirements on each school's website.
Should you require Maths tuition for the 11+ entrance exam, please contact: [email protected] to find out how I can help you.
No.
Non Verbal Reasoning uses a different set of skills not covered in this programme. It involves observation techniques around patterns, symmetry, shape, position, rotation, layers and much more. Tuition can be arranged separately for this, should your child need it. Please contact: [email protected].
